Rashad Evans? busted eye and Mac Danzig?s busted ankle are your pictures of the day

Those short elbows that Jon Jones used on Rashad Evans, and the heel hook Efrain Escudero used on Mac Danzig did some damage. Evans tweeted a picture of his eye the day after the fight. Danzig, who managed to win his bout even though his ankle was swollen and ugly, showed how it was still bruised and swollen. He plans to get an MRI later this week to see what damage was caused at UFC 146. It’s just another reminder that fighters’ jobs are not like ours, unless your job involves laughing off injuries on a daily basis.

Klipsch Gallery G-17 Air

Editors’ Note (4/11/2012): After the most recent version of iOS was released, the previously mentioned issue of interrupted AirPlay streams was cleared up. We have since tested and confirmed this, and as such have revised the review and score to reflect that improvement.

As AirPlay speaker systems increase in number?most of them still being referred to as “docks” despite a lack of an actual dock for an iPhone, iPod, or iPad?a few things are becoming increasingly clear. Almost all AirPlay docks are black, and the Klipsch Gallery G-17 Air is no exception. They are all pretty expensive?the G-17 is a hefty $549.99 (direct). For the most part, all AirPlay docks thus far offer quality audio, ranging from booming bass, as with the Audyssey Audio Dock Air ($399.99, 3.5 stars) to superb high fidelity sound, as with the Bowers & Wilkins Zeppelin Air ($599.95, 4 stars). The G-17 sounds excellent, and as of the most recent iOS update, has resolved the streaming issues we experienced in the past.?

Design
The rounded, glossy black piano finish of the Gallery G-17 Air is striking, as is the horizontal array of drivers?two 20-watt woofers in the middle and two 10-watt tweeters on the far left and right ends of the front panel. A small Klipsch logo and a remote sensor are the only other things on the front panel. All of the controls are located on the small right-hand side panel?Power, Volume, Input Select, and Wi-Fi, which is used for inital setup. The back panel houses the power cable connection, a 3.5mm Aux input, and a USB connection. You’ll need a Phillips head screwdriver to attach the glass stand to the speaker unit (screws are included), but the G-17 is also wall-mountable. Also included with the G-17 and its stand: a rubber cover for the input panel on the back, a black cloth grille cover in case you want to hide the awesome looking drivers, a remote control, the power supply, an owners manual, and?seriously?white gloves, so your fingertips don’t smudge the glossy black surface when you move the system.

The included remote can be frustrating to use?depending on the angle, and strength of the Wi-Fi signal, adjusting the volume can be a very delayed process. When the signal is good and the audio is streaming smoothly, the remote, which is a simple, thin, black plastic controller with membrane buttons, works fine. It has Power, Volume, Play/Pause, Skip Forward/Backward, and Input Select buttons.

Performance
The Gallery G-17 offers fairly powerful, refined audio performance for its size. There are four drivers but no subwoofer, and the net result is a audiophile-friendly flat response, devoid of booming deep bass but quite capable of articulating low frequencies well. Kick drums sound tight, not thunderous. Lower register stringed instruments sound pleasantly resonant, not overly boosted or booming. John Adams’ modern classical piece, “The Chairman Dances,” sounds neither overly bright nor rumbly. Instead, the G-17′s response favors mid-range frequencies, occasionally allowing high frequency percussion hits, like wood blocks, to pop out from the more commanding force of the stringed instruments. At maximum volume on deep bass tracks, the G-17 doesn’t distort, but this is partially due to the lack of booming bass pushed out by the speakers. Still, many systems that have no subwoofer try to reproduce deep bass frequencies with the result of distortion, and the G-17 avoids this problem. The Knife’s “Silent Shout,” at maximum volume, doesn’t sound as thumping as it would on a system with a sub, but it does not distort either, and the bass frequencies are still well represented. Basically, the G-17 offers a nice, smooth response throughout the frequency range that doesn’t exaggerate the lows or ignore them. Fans of accurate response over booming bass will be pleased.

Because AirPlay relies on Wi-Fi, it’s dependent on the bandwidth of the local network. The more tasks being completed on the Wi-Fi network, no matter how un-taxing on the bandwidth, like sending an email, the more likely the stream is to pause, or stop completely. We have since tested the Klipsch Gallery G-17 Air again with the new version of iOS and experienced little to no interruption in the stream. This is a vast improvement over our initial tests of the speaker, and we have revised its score accordingly.

Apple is reportedly choosing to either switch to or include Bluetooth streaming into the AirPlay feature. Even a year or so ago, Bluetooth streaming was still a weak audio solution, with very little bass and low bit-rate fidelity. But recent developments have strengthened the audio quality greatly, as evidenced by recent Editors’ Choices, the portable Bose SoundLink Wireless Mobile Speaker ($299.95, 4 stars) and the fantastic JBL OnBeat Xtreme ($499.95, 4.5 stars), which shows up as an AirPlay device on an iPhone or iPad, but uses Bluetooth. As of the most recent iOS update, AirPlay and Bluetooth seem to be similarly reliable.

The Bowers & Wilkins Zeppelin Air remains at the top of the list of AirPlay docks, in terms of audio performance, with the Klipsch Gallery G-17 close to the top with the most recent version of iOS. The streaming issues have been resolved, and it’s now about as functional as a Bluetooth speaker, with excellent audio quality.?

Flood! | The Burns Agency Blog

Are YOU now in a Flood Plain?

FEMA recently remapped many areas, including Oneida County, NY.? Some homes that were previously in a flood zone are no longer, but many properties that were not, now are in a flood hazard area. The maps are not yet final, there is a public comment period.? You can access the proposed maps and see whether your property has been affected. Go to https://www.rampp-team.com/ny.htm and view the information for your county. If you click on your location on the Interactive Flood Map index it will open the proposed flood map for your area. Make sure that if you have Adobe software that your internet preferences are set to? ?display PDF in browser? or you won?t be able to open your local map.? If you see any discrepancies in the topography or drainage issues suggested by the new maps then you will want to have your comments heard before the maps are finalized.

Why should you care?

Because any federally-backed lender that provides a loan on a property in a flood zone will require the property owner to carry a flood policy. This is an extra expense for the property owner, one that may come as a bit of a shock to you when refinancing or taking a home equity loan or buying a new home.

Why do you need flood insurance?

Part of the legislation that created the National Flood Insurance Program (so that flood coverage would be available to those who need it) also mandates that lenders require flood coverage on properties located in flood hazard areas. They do this for multiple reasons, which include protection of the lender?s loans, spreading of the flood risk, and reduced financial devastation to flood-impacted areas. In order to receive federal assistance after a flood , the territory must be proclaimed a disaster area (at a distinct level of disaster) by certain officials. You may not receive aid, or the aid only may be in the form of a loan with interest. You cannot not rely upon government assistance in the event of a flood, you should protect yourself with the purchase of a flood insurance policy.

How does a flood policy work?

Many people only want to insure to the amount of their loan. This practice does not provide adequate protection though. In the event of a claim, a depreciation reduction will be applied to the damaged items resulting in a claim payment of less than the full cost to repair or replace.

Unlike other types of insurance, a flood policy can be transferred from one property owner to another. When you buy or sell a property you can contact the other person and have the policy turned over along with the deed .

When you buy a new policy there is a 30-day waiting period before the policy can go into effect, unless the insurance purchase is in conjunction with the property purchase or a new loan.

5 more minutes? New clock answers resounding ‘no’

(AP) ? There is no snooze button. If you unplug it, a battery takes over. As wake-up time approaches, you cannot reset the alarm time.

It could be the world’s most exasperating alarm clock.

Once it goes off, to stop it you must get out of bed, go into the kitchen or bathroom, and punch the day’s date into a telephone-style keypad. That’s the only way to stop the loud ‘ding-ding,’ designed to sound like a customer angrily banging on a concierge bell at a hotel.

It was invented by Paul Sammut, a 25-year-old engineer who lives in Hoboken. During the day, he builds and researches underwater robots and vehicles at the nearby Stevens Institute of Technology.

He started working on the gadget because he was finding it hard to get up and make it to work on time after college.

“I wanted to make something that would essentially force me to get out of bed when I wanted to get out of bed the night before,” said Sammut. “And I was thinking about ways of doing it and I thought about how in high school I had the perfect solution to this, which was my mother, and how she would, if it was time for me to wake up, she would force me out of bed.”

He built the prototype in his spare time and uses it every day.

“Now I wake up before it goes off,” said Sammut. “I subconsciously fear it and know I have to get up.”

After a friend suggested he try and sell the device, he made a video demonstrating it, and posted that on kickstarter.com. That’s a website where the general public can support creative ideas by investing in them financially.

“We raised over $150,000 over a month and a half and we currently have over 400 orders,” said Sammut.

Sammut has formed a company and is now trying to fill all the clock orders by the end of the summer.

He acknowledges there is one way to stop the alarm without getting out of bed.

“You could smash it,” said Sammut.

But with a $350 price tag, that would be a really expensive way to sleep in.

New Study Proves That A Lack Of Insurance Is Only One Part Of …

MARCH brought frenzied attention to Barack Obama’s health law. The Supreme Court heard arguments over its constitutionality. Outside the court, supporters waved their neatly printed posters and tea-partiers waved their scrawled, angry ones. The ruckus centered on Mr Obama’s mandate to buy insurance. America is the rare Western country without a universal insurance scheme. But, as a new study points out, a lack of insurance is only part of America’s health problem.

On April 3rd the University of Wisconsin and the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, a philanthropic outfit, released a new report on health in America’s counties. The report is part of a string of efforts to sort through the mounds of data on health and the factors that affect it. The jumble of information does not reveal a perfectly clear picture. But it begins to illuminate the particular nature of America’s health and why it is so dismal.

America, it is often noted, spends more on health care yet has worse results than other rich countries. Its infant-mortality rate, for example, is double that of Sweden, Germany and France (to name only a few). A closer look reveals conflicting trends within America itself. A recent ranking of states’ health, sponsored by the foundation of UnitedHealth, America’s biggest insurer, was filled with contradictions. America is making good progress to reduce smoking and the toll of infectious disease, yet diabetes rates are climbing and tens of millions remain uninsured. The north-east is a picture of health compared with the South. Vermont, New Hampshire and Massachusetts are among the five healthiest states; Mississippi, Alabama and Louisiana are the lowest. Resources vary wildly from one state to another. Massachusetts has 192 primary-care doctors for every 100,000 people; Idaho has just 78. Behavior is similarly spotty. In Florida whites are 30% more likely to smoke than blacks. In Minnesota the reverse is true.

The new report takes an even closer look, inspecting data for more than 3,000 counties. The authors, led by Bridget Booske Catlin of the University of Wisconsin, rank each state’s counties according to health outcomes: premature death, poor mental and physical health and low birth weights for babies. Separately, they examine the factors that influence health, such as clinical care, income and behavior.

Wide gaps existed within each state. The five least-healthy counties generally had more than twice the teenage birth rate of the five healthiest counties, and more than twice the share of poor children. Within counties, factors seem to contradict one another. In Putnam, New York’s healthiest county, 29% of adults are obese, compared with 28% in the Bronx, New York’s least-healthy county. Putnam also has higher rates of binge drinking–21% compared with 14% in the Bronx. Yet the Bronx has lower education rates, eight times the rate of teen pregnancies and New York’s highest concentration of fast-food restaurants. Lack of insurance, therefore, is only part of the puzzle.

Kris Humphries to Subpeona, Expose Kim Kardashian!

Kris Humphries isn’t simply asking Kim Kardashian to show him the money.

According to a new tabloid report, he’ll also be asking his ex-wife to show him the emails, texts and phone records. Legal system style!

Kim Kardashian: Cheater?!?

“He’s ready to subpoena friends and family as well as producers of her reality shows,” a Humphries insider tells Life & Style. “Once a subpoena is granted, it opens the floodgates for all types of evidence: emails, text messages, phone calls and more.”

And, according to this insider, those exchanges will “prove a lot of things, like series setups, staged events and scripts.” If asked about them under oath inside a courtroom, Kim would be legally obligated to tell the truth.

The same goes for any evidence that Kim cheated on Kris, though none actually exists in the above issue.

As these two battle back and forth, we must ask: Which side are you on in the divorce war?
